Irish
Hunter is a „type“, usually a combination of Thoroughbred
and something else, very often Irish Draught horses. It is
a riding horse with sound limbs and good bone.
As its name suggest, the hunter developed as a horse of chase.
You can use the Irish hunter in hunting or in show hunter
classes.
To produce
hunters, many Cross-breeds are used. Irish Hunters are divided
into three weight classes, plus divisions for small hunters
and ladies hunters. The light- weight hunter will have a
large percentage of Thoroughbred blood. It is normally expected
to be an upstanding, elegant horse. The middleweight hunter
must be capable of carrying up to 89 kg all day in the hunting
field. Therefore it is more substantial but should still
show quality and refinement. The heavy-weight must be capable
of carrying up to more than 89 kg, it is yet still a powerful
and athletic jumper. It is a difficult horse to find today.
The
Irish Hunter is well known for its general robustness. Easy
to feed it is usually a healthy horse. Most importantly
the Irish Hunter is a brave and intelligent animal, making
it all the more easy to handle. It is brave with great reserves
of stamina.
The
Irish Hunter can be found in all colours except skewbald
and piebald. The classic Irish Hunter is well proportioned,
has a sloping shoulder, strong back and loins. Its head
is well proportioned, with large and expressive eyes, ears
are nicely shaped and long and the neck is lengthy, muscular
with a slight arch. A well set head allows the horse to
keep balance in all paces.
