Ponies
Connemara is a beautiful, but wild and rugged area of mountains,
bogs and lakes. Here there is no lush grass, only the tough grass
that covers the bogs and mountains. Harsh gales blow over the
area from the Atlantic ocean. It is this harsh land with little
shelter which has produced the Connemara pony, the tough, hardy
animals which are now famous the world over.
Subsisting on the rough mountain herbage, the ponies were once
indispensable in the struggle for survival of the local farming
population, carrying out all the duties of the farm horse.

The
origins of the present day Connemara pony stem from the native
Irish breed, with the addition of Arabian and Andalusia blood
during the time of Ireland’s extensive trade with Spain
hundreds of years ago. During the Irish famine of the 1840’s
the pony population was decimated and the quality of those
ponies declined. In 1891, further influence was exerted by
the importation of Welsh Stallions.
The beautiful
Connemara pony can be ridden by both child and adult. It
is a sturdy, sure footed pony standing from 132cm to 147cm
high. The predominant colours are grey, bay, dun, chestnut.
The Connemara is a very agile pony with a gentle nature,
which makes it very easy to train. It possesses great courage,
which allows it to be used in top-level competitions all
over the world.
The
Connemara Breeders Society was founded in 1923. Since then,
many Connemara Ponies have been exported and breed societies
have been formed in many countries, including England and
America.
